Job Description Summary:
This position reports to ED/OBS Billing Analysis Manager and performs facility coding functions for ED and Observation Departments system wide. Does not hire, fire, discipline, promote, demote, transfer, or appraise staff.
Responsibilities And Duties:
90%
Assigns appropriate E/M (evaluation and management) code, Observation hourly charges and CPT codes after reading all documentation contained within the electronic medical record (including but not limited to provider notes, nursing documentation, radiology reports, lab reports and consultations/operating notes) and using knowledge of correct coding guidelines as appropriate for the particular patient type and/or service while maintaining at least a 95% accuracy and productivity rate. Maintains a detailed knowledge of Observation charging rules as it relates to carve outs and specific payers. Reviews Medication Administration Record (MAR) and calculates appropriate infusion/hydration charges based on strict CMS hierarchy guidelines.

In the event of missing or insufficient documentation, assigns deficiencies and/or queries to the appropriate provider(s) and follows department policies for account follow-up.

Additional Job Description:
Some college preferred. Knowledge of Emergency Medicine and Observation facility billing as it relates to inpatient and outpatient accounts, critical care charging guidelines, detailed understanding of CPT-4 classification systems, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology as demonstrated by successful completion of coursework. 2- 3 Years of Experience in a hospital environment.
