Principal Engineer - Substation Engineering (Remote) Location: Remote Duration: 12 Months (Contract) Job Overview Join a dynamic Engineering & Construction team as a Principal Engineer in Substation Engineering. In this role, you will plan, monitor, and manage internal substation projects from initiation through completion. Job Duties & Responsibilities • Collaborate on developing substation projects from conception (early stage) through construction and commissioning (execution). • In the conceptual phase, support project engineering requirements and scope for competitive transmission proposals or greenfield projects. • Plan, coordinate, and complete large-scale or multiple medium, complex, or long-term projects within budgetary and scheduling guidelines. • Secure required resources and use formal processes/tools to manage resources, budgets, risks, and changes. • Conduct project meetings, track progress, perform analysis, identify issues, validate results, and implement solutions to challenges. • Provide updates to internal and external stakeholders on moderate to complex issues; create and deliver presentation materials. • Provide technical oversight of external engineers of record (EOR) for assigned substation projects to ensure compliance with generation interconnection agreements, scope of work, project specifications, site-specific design requirements, IEEE, NESC, ASCE, and applicable industry codes/standards. • Secure engineering consulting resources from approved suppliers by developing scopes of work, securing bids, evaluating, and awarding contracts. • Coordinate with project stakeholders to develop/secure substation sites, support engineering updates, data, and permits for design and construction. • Represent internal and external interests on assigned projects, including presentations on progress, issues, and risk mitigation to various management levels. • Support review of interconnection documentation (e.g., system impact studies, facility studies, reactive/harmonic studies, interconnection agreements); ensure compliance with transmission owner requirements, ISO standards, and project design. Communicate frequently with transmission owners/operators/ISOs for timely, accurate deliverables. • Manage project long-lead major material orders to minimize delays or budget overruns; assist with scope of work creation, review, approval, and procurement preparation. • Oversee development of substation design documents (physical drawings, electrical schematics, civil drawings) through 10%, 30%, 60%, 90%, and Issue For Construction (IFC) stages; interface with EORs. • Manage review of substation design drawings/documents; coordinate comments on EOR submissions. • Collaborate with engineering resources across disciplines to set priorities, work plans, and lines of demarcation; support project schedules from an engineering perspective. • Ensure projects are implemented efficiently, cost-effectively, and safely per department processes, industry standards, and policies. • Support project commissioning activities to meet objectives. • Assist with regulatory filings, depositions, or hearings as needed. • Collaborate with OEMs to enhance/adapt designs for better integration. • Conduct external research and stay current on new developments/innovations relevant to projects. Required Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Master of Science or MBA a plus). • 10+ years’ experience in substation design and engineering of high-voltage substation projects (highly preferred). • Project engineering and/or project management experience with a strong bias for action (PMP and/or P.E. a plus; not required to stamp drawings). • Willingness to travel within North America.
